Expert Treatment From an Expert Eye Doctor

Glaucoma Surgery

Glaucoma is a serious eye condition caused by increased pressure in the eye, which damages the optic nerve and can lead to blindness if left untreated. When conservative methods (like special glaucoma medications and lifestyle changes) are insufficient, surgery may be the best course of action to prevent further vision loss.

Available Glaucoma Treatment Options

At Reeves Eye Surgery Center, we offer two innovative surgical procedures that have been proven effective in managing glaucoma. These procedures offer new possibilities for patients seeking surgery to treat their condition and prevent further vision loss.

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a minimally invasive laser procedure that targets the drainage system of the eye, specifically the trabecular meshwork. The trabecular meshwork is responsible for regulating the outflow of aqueous humor, the fluid that nourishes the eye. In glaucoma, the drainage system becomes compromised, leading to increased intraocular pressure (IOP) and potential damage to the optic nerve. During SLT, a specialized laser is used to stimulate the trabecular meshwork cells, facilitating improved fluid flow and reducing IOP. This procedure is typically performed in an outpatient setting and can be repeated if necessary.

Endoscopic Cyclophotocoagulation (ECP) uses an endoscope (a tiny camera) to allow the surgeon to visualize the ciliary body, the part of the eye that produces aqueous humor. Using laser energy, the ciliary body is selectively treated, reducing its ability to produce excessive amounts of fluid. By modulating fluid production, ECP helps control IOP and preserve vision. This procedure is often used as an adjunct to other glaucoma surgeries or as an alternative for patients who may not be suitable candidates for traditional glaucoma procedures.

Both SLT and ECP offer distinct advantages in glaucoma management. These procedures are safe, effective, and minimally invasive, resulting in minimal discomfort and shorter recovery times than traditional glaucoma surgeries. They can be performed as standalone procedures or in conjunction with other treatments, providing personalized solutions for each patient's unique needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can glaucoma be treated without surgery?

Glaucoma can be managed with non-surgical treatment options such as eye drops and lifestyle changes (regular exercise, maintaining a healthy diet, avoiding smoking, managing underlying health conditions, etc.) However, if these methods are not sufficient, surgery may be necessary to prevent further vision loss.

Can glaucoma be cured?

Currently, there is no cure for glaucoma or a way to reverse the vision loss it can cause. However, with early detection, proper treatment, and regular follow-up care, it can be effectively managed, slowing down the progression of the disease and preserving vision.

Will I need to continue taking glaucoma medications after surgery?

The goal of glaucoma surgery is to reduce or eliminate the need for daily medication. However, in some cases, patients may still need to take eye drops or oral medications to maintain their intraocular pressure.
